Maine Coon
The Maine Coon is the largest domestic breed: males grow to 8–10 kilograms. Lynx tips on the ears, a long coat, a quiet chirping voice and a calm, very homely nature.

What to expect with a Maine Coon
I write about the downsides too: a kitten returned after a month is worse than a sale that never happened.

Temperament
A calm, affectionate companion cat. The voice is quiet, a chirp — Maine Coons do not yowl. They get on with children and dogs.

Size and coat
Males 8–10 kg, females 5–7. They grow slowly, up to three years. The coat is long: brush at least once a week, more often when shedding.

What you need at home
A large litter box and a scratching post to match their height, a high perch and a raised bowl. A Maine Coon needs space — it is a big cat.
About the breed
Maine Coons in brief
The breed comes from the American state of Maine, where cats lived on farms and survived cold winters. Hence the heavy bone, dense undercoat and the bushy tail they wrap themselves in to sleep.
My lines are classic colours: black marble, solid, tortie with white, blue. I work towards a large type with a “square” muzzle and a strong chin, but health always comes first.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants a big, calm and affectionate companion cat. Maine Coons get on with children and dogs, but they grow slowly — up to three years — and need brushing at least once a week.
