A Bengal is a leopard pattern on a domestic cat. A short coat with glitter, a muscular body and a personality that never lets you get bored: Bengals are talkative, love water and height, and follow their owner from room to room.

What to expect with a Bengal
I write about the downsides too: a kitten returned after a month is worse than a sale that never happened.

Temperament
Talkative and busy: a Bengal follows you around, climbs the wardrobes and plays with water. A bored Bengal invents its own entertainment.

Size and coat
Females 3–4 kg, males 5–7. The coat is short with glitter — almost no shedding or smell, and no brushing needed.

What you need at home
High shelves or a cat tree to the ceiling, wand toys and at least half an hour of play a day. A Bengal will not become a quiet cushion cat.
About the breed
Bengals in brief
The breed comes from crossing a domestic cat with the Asian leopard cat. Today’s Bengals are fully domestic animals; all that remains of the wild ancestor is the pattern and the energy.
In the cattery I work with brown rosetted, brown marbled and silver. What I value most is a crisp rosette with a contrasting outline, a light belly and a warm background.
Who it suits
Active people and families with older children. A Bengal needs play, shelves under the ceiling and company — it is not a cat “for the interior”. In return it hardly sheds and has almost no smell.
